Musanje innovations

New ideas.
Practical possibilities.

We are interested in innovations that help farmers plan better, explore alternative feed ingredients and create more value from local resources.

Area being exploredCircular farming & alternative protein

Black Soldier Fly:
small insects, new possibilities.

Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae can convert suitable organic materials into insect biomass that can be processed and evaluated as an animal feed ingredient. Research is examining its role in more circular food and farming systems.

01

Select suitable materials

Assess available organic materials for suitability, consistency and safe handling.

02

Rear the larvae

Manage the production environment and document the materials used and the outputs obtained.

03

Process & evaluate

Assess nutrient composition, processing, quality and suitability for professionally formulated feeds.

04

Measure the case

Compare production costs, farmer acceptance and flock performance before wider adoption.

For Musanje, BSF is presented as an innovation interest. This page does not announce a commercial BSF product or a completed production facility.

Questions that guide exploration

Build the evidence. Then scale.

Local results matter. The right approach must work for farmers, feed formulation and the business behind production.

01

Feed ingredient potential

Explore insect-derived ingredients with nutritional analysis and professional formulation, rather than assuming a direct replacement for existing feeds.

02

Resource recovery

Investigate suitable organic material streams and potential uses for residual material, subject to evaluation and appropriate handling.

03

Farmer livelihoods

Examine whether group participation, skills development and local production could support viable enterprises for women and young people.

Learn more about the research

The International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology (icipe) explores insect-based feed and circular farming through its INSEFF programme. This is a research reference, not a Musanje partnership.
